Special security and traffic arrangements will be implemented from April 1 in line with the upcoming Sinhala and Tamil New Year, police said.

Deputy Inspector General of Police (Traffic Control and Road Safety) W. P. J. Senadheera said that, with the expected increase in travel during the festive season, additional traffic and security personnel will be deployed across the country.

He said special attention will be given to key public transport hubs, including railway stations and main bus stands in major cities such as Colombo, where traffic control and safety measures will be strengthened.

This special programme, commencing on April 1, will remain in effect continuously until the conclusion of the festive season and until the public has returned from their hometowns to the cities.

The DIG said the coordinated plan, in line with previous years, will be implemented under the guidance of the Inspector General of Police, with officers already deployed for duty.

Meanwhile, police officers currently deployed at fuel stations will be gradually withdrawn and reassigned to special traffic and security operations.

Earlier, following concerns over panic buying and fuel hoarding, Sri Lanka Police were deployed to fuel stations nationwide to maintain order and manage traffic.
