Soldier honoured for saving lives in Ella bus tragedy

• Despite sustaining a serious head injury, he continued to assist in the rescue operation 

Lance Corporal W.M.V.M. Bandara of the 2nd Special Forces Regiment has been promoted in recognition of his bravery during the recent fatal bus accident near Rawana Ella on the Ella–Wellawaya main road, which claimed 16 lives and injured several others.  

Bandara, who was off duty and travelling home on the ill-fated bus on September 16, risked his own life to rescue three passengers trapped in the wreckage. Despite sustaining a serious head injury, he continued to assist in the rescue operation.   

Army Commander Lieutenant General Lasantha Rodrigo, acknowledging his courageous act, promoted him to the rank of Corporal and presented him with a financial reward at Army Headquarters, the Army said.
