The Dematagoda Police yesterday presented facts before Colombo Additional Magistrate Kasun Kanchana Dissanayake regarding the discovery of the body of a deceased infant believed to be several days old, found abandoned inside a train carriage that had travelled from Puttalam to Colombo.
A janitor attached to the Railway Department had discovered the corpse inside a lavatory while cleaning the train and lodged a complaint with the Dematagoda Police.
Police Sergeant Kulathunga of the Dematagoda Police stated that the infant’s body was found inside a black bag placed in the lavatory of the train that had departed Puttalam and arrived at the Maradana Railway Station at 10:46 a.m. yesterday.
He informed court that the train had been moved to the Maligawatte railway yard for cleaning when the janitor made the discovery. The janitor had then immediately informed the Dematagoda Police.
The Dematagoda Police noted that an investigation has already been launched and that steps were being taken to obtain an order to send the remains for a postmortem examination.
After considering the submissions, Colombo Additional Magistrate Kasun Kanchana Dissanayake ordered that the body be sent for a postmortem examination and instructed that a report be submitted to court.
