SL has taught the world a lesson by restoring democracy after the Aragalaya: Ranil

Former President Ranil Wickremesinghe said yesterday that Sri Lanka has taught an important lesson to the world by restoring political and economic stability in the aftermath of the Aragalaya, despite negative narratives promoted by sections of the international media.

Speaking at the launch of Aragalaya Balaya, a book authored by Professor Sunanda Madduma Bandara, Wickremesinghe said the stable government formed following the protests was able to address the core demands raised by the public.

“The protesters wanted fuel, gas and food. They wanted the economy stabilized. We achieved all of that and then held elections so the people could choose a new government,” he said. “International media initially welcomed the Aragalaya but later accused us of suppressing protesters. However, we managed to restore stability.”

Wickremesinghe also criticized the stance of some foreign news outlets on political unrest in other countries.

“Today, international media are encouraging protests in Bangladesh, Nepal, and Madagascar,” he said. “But can the BBC or Al Jazeera provide the funds needed to stabilize their economies? We, however, have managed to do it ourselves.”

He stressed that Sri Lanka must protect its democratic traditions and its constitution, noting that the country possesses one of the oldest constitutional histories in Asia.
