The UNP said yesterday that its leader and former President Ranil Wickremesinghe had to be taken to Singapore for medical treatment because the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) was on a witch-hunt against Sri Lankan doctors who treated him.
Addressing a press conference, UNP Chairman Wajira Abeywardana said the country is in a dire predicament today because the government came to power by spreading falsehoods. He said the current government had lied to the public more than any other party.
He said it is vital for political parties not to propagate falsehoods for political gain in the future.
Responding to a question as to why Mr Wickremesinghe was not treated in Sri Lanka, he said, “Mr Wickremesinghe was summoned by the CID to give a statement on August 22, 2025. After giving the statement, he was arrested and produced before court.
He was interrogated by the CID for nearly six hours. He was taken to court by 3.00 p.m. After court deliberations lasting eight hours, he was remanded until the following day. It was a late-night ruling. After that, he was taken to the remand prison at around 11.00 p.m. He was admitted to hospital due to high blood pressure and elevated sugar levels.”
He said Mr Wickremesinghe was referred to the National Hospital for treatment by the consultants who examined him and was kept under intensive care.
“When the case against him was taken up next, he was still at the hospital. He joined the proceedings only through Zoom technology,” he said.
He said that even the doctors who treated Mr Wickremesinghe were later humiliated through the spread of fake information.
