The Police Department is in the process of introducing facial recognition system to identify suspects involved in criminal activities, it was revealed yesterday during a meeting with the President and senior police officers.
This police communication data network would be established with the collaboration of Sri Lanka Police, Department of Immigration and Emigration, Department for Registration of Persons and Sri Lanka Telecom.
This decision was taken when President Maithripala Sirisena met with a group of senior police officers at the Presidential Secretariat .
Accordingly, details of the suspects those involved with crimes and those who absconding arrest, under the new initiative the police officers can identify those suspects from anywhere using a smart mobile phone.
Meanwhile, during the meeting it was also discussed about the programme which would be implemented to minimize accidents at the railway crossings.
Minister Arjuna Ranathunga and acting IGP C. D. Wickramarathna were also attended the meeting.
