No arrested underworld figures will die while in police custody now: Justice Minister

Makadure Madush was allegedly killed while in police custody thereby preventing him from divulging names of politicians who were linked to the underworld 

Underworld figures in police custody have revealed names. Public Security Minister Ananda Wijepala will reveal those names shortly

Justice Minister Harshana Nanayakkara yesterday assured that no underworld figures who were arrested will die in police custody.  

He told Parliament that underworld figures like Makadure Madush died in police custody which prevented him divulging names of politicians who were linked to the underworld.  

“Underworld figures like Madush were allegedly killed in police custody to avoid divulging names,” he said.   The Minister said underworld figures in police custody had revealed names and added that Public Security Minister Ananda Wijepala will reveal those names shortly.   

“We are not linked to the underworld and we will never support them. When we investigate and arrest culprits, please don’t object to it,’ he said.   

The Minister said all politicians must not get scared of their names being revealed, only those who have links must be scared.
