An injured wild elephant in Somawathiya National Park is currently undergoing continuous medical treatment after being shot at, according to the Somawathiya Wildlife Office.
Wildlife officers confirmed that the elephant sustained gunshot wounds to its front left leg and rear right leg. The injured animal, identified as a 35-year-old male approximately eight feet tall, was found roaming in distress near the Somawathiya Maha Viharaya. Amitha Sri Nalaka, Officer-in-Charge of the Somawathiya Site Protection Office, said the elephant appeared to be in severe pain and a weakened condition. Upon receiving information about its location, officials tranquilized the animal and began administering medical care.
Nalaka added that treatment efforts are ongoing, with wildlife authorities closely monitoring the elephant’s recovery.
