Sri Lanka will experience unsettled weather conditions with both hot daytime temperatures and afternoon showers affecting several parts of the country in the coming days.

According to the Department of Meteorology, the heat index, or the temperature felt on the human body, is expected to rise to “caution level” in the Northern, North-Central, Eastern, Sabaragamuwa and North-Western provinces, as well as in the Colombo, Gampaha, Hambantota and Monaragala districts during the daytime.

The department advised the public to take necessary precautions to avoid heat-related discomfort.

Meanwhile, it has forecast showers or thundershowers in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, North-Western and Eastern provinces, along with the Polonnaruwa, Galle and Matara districts after 2.00 p.m.

“Fairly heavy rainfall exceeding 50 mm is likely at some locations in the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces and in the Galle and Matara districts,” it said.  Furthermore, the department stated that morning showers are expected in coastal areas of the Southern Province and in the Kalutara, Colombo and Puttalam districts.

In addition, misty conditions may occur in parts of the Central, Sabaragamuwa and Uva provinces, as well as in the Ampara District during the early hours of the day.

In the light of the mixed conditions, residents are advised to stay alert to changing weather conditions and take precautions where necessary.
