The government is taking steps to appoint a Women’s Commission to address the challenges and issues faced by women, the Ministry of Women and Child Affairs said.
Deputy Minister Namal Sudarshana said that a seven-member panel has already been appointed to serve on the commission.
These appointments have been made under the powers granted by the Women’s Empowerment Act No. 34 of 2024.
The commission will handle complaints regarding harassment, injustice, and other problems faced by women in both government and private sector workplaces.
In addition, the commission will also receive complaints related to societal oppression against women.
The Deputy Minister added that instructions will be provided for the review of cases concerning women that are currently pending in the courts.
He further said plans to establish a dedicated fund within the commission to raise resources through internationally operating women’s organisations.
