Deputy Minister of Defence Major General Aruna Jayasekara (Retd) has emphasized the urgent need to strengthen community-based lifesaving capabilities in Sri Lanka, citing the rising number of drowning-related deaths and the absence of a comprehensive national-level plan.
He also highlighted the importance of addressing security concerns at fishery harbours, enhancing marine environmental protection, regulating ferry operations, and intensifying efforts to combat narcotics trafficking through coordinated action with relevant ministries.
The remarks were made during his visit last Thursday (April 30) to the Sri Lanka Coast Guard Headquarters in Mirissa and the Lifesaving Training School in Balapitiya. The Deputy Minister was received by Director General of the Sri Lanka Coast Guard, Rear Admiral Rohan Joseph. During his visit to the training school, he observed a live lifesaving demonstration and commended Coast Guard personnel for their critical role in rescuing lives.
At the Coast Guard Headquarters, following a comprehensive briefing and inspection of facilities, the Deputy Minister reviewed command and control systems, operational coordination, and maritime security preparedness. He also assessed drone surveillance capabilities, assistance provided to fishing and coastal communities, and measures taken to protect the marine environment. He praised the Coast Guard for its exemplary work in lifesaving operations, oil spill response, and drug interdiction. Senior officials from the Ministry of Defence and the Coast Guard were also present at the event.
