Car falls into Viyana canal, killing two

A car with two passengers on board had veered off the road and fallen into the Viyana canal at Mapakada in the early hours of last morning. The two passengers had died in the incident.   

The deceased R.M. Sumith Ratnayake (53), a father of two children and Sunil Nishantha (52), also a father of two children were residents of Okkampitiya and businessmen. Investigations revealed that the motorcar had been driven by the former.   

They were on their way to Kandy along Mahiyangana –Okkampitiya road running parallel to the Viyana canal when they met with accident.   

The officers of Mapakada Police Training College and the residents of the area had evacuated the two passengers from the car and rushed to Mahiyangana Base Hospital only to be pronounced dead.   

Mahiyangana Police are conducting further investigations.
