Arms and ammo recovered from Yala tank bund

A haul of arms and ammunition was recovered last morning from the tank bund near sluices in Veheragala tank in Yala National Park in Buttala by Gonagalara police.   

Police said they recovered 74 T56 magazines, 35 LMG Drums, several empty GMPG magazines, and two bags of chemicals.   

The haul of arms and ammunition had emerged when the water level in the tank dwindled owing to the prevailing dry weather.   

Police had rushed to the scene with the army on information received from fishermen and recovered the arms and ammunition.   

On suspicion of there being more weapons and ammunition buried in the tank bed the police had taken steps to carry out further search operations with the help of  navy divers.
