A candidate of an independent group contesting for Ambalangoda Pradeshiya Sabha, one of the 339 local government bodies for which elections are scheduled to be held tomorrow was seriously injured while another person was killed in a shooting at a restaurant in Meetiyagoda on Saturday night (03).
The deceased Sarath Chaminda Udaya Kumara (57) was a resident of Eranawila in Meetiyagoda. The injured was a 64year old candidate who had been on remand in connection with a murder and released recently.
Investigations revealed that the two men had been having a drink at the restaurant when they were shot by four men with a T56 rifle and a 09mm pistol. However, the police said the shooting was not an incident of political violence.
Meetiyagoda Police are conducting further investigations on the instructions of Galle DIG Jagath Sarem.
