The Director General of the Road Development Authority (RDA), Wimal Kandambi, has confirmed that 75 major highways around the country have been severely damaged due to floods and landslides caused by ongoing adverse weather conditions.

He said that the necessary financial provisions have been allocated for urgent reconstruction, and all efforts are underway to restore the highway network as rainfall decreases.

Speaking to the media yesterday (27), Kandambi highlighted that roads in the Central, Uva, and Eastern provinces have suffered serious damage, while minor damage has been reported in the North-Central, Southern, Sabaragamuwa, and Northwestern provinces. Several roads in the Eastern Province remain blocked by flooding, and landslides have occurred in mountainous areas.

“The RDA is providing a 24-hour service to clear blockages and ensure safe access for traffic and residents. Staff from provincial directorates, chief engineers, and executive engineers are working day and night to restore affected roads,” he said.   Regarding the Kadugannawa road section,  which is temporarily closed, the Director General said reconstruction will commence as soon as rainfall subsides and the National Building Research Institute issues its recommendations. Around 25–30 large stones need to be removed to make the road fully safe.

Mr. Kandambi added that no bridges have been reported damaged so far, but if any are affected, temporary iron bridges will be constructed immediately. He further stated that, in addition to budgeted flood-damage provisions, additional financial measures will be taken to expedite the repair of all damaged roads.
