Rotary International District 3220 commenced the 2026–2027 Rotary year on  July 1, 2026 with the islandwide flagship initiative, “Sharp Eyes Learn Better,” as District Governor Kumar Sundararaj dedicated his first day to service.

The programme aims to provide 25,000 prescription spectacles to schoolchildren across Sri Lanka, ensuring that poor eyesight never becomes a barrier to education, confidence, or opportunity. Marking the official commencement, 50 students from the Wattala area who had undergone vision screening received their prescription spectacles together with school support books, empowering them to continue their education with renewed confidence.

Hosted by the Rotary Club of Wattala, the event brought together beneficiary families, Rotary District officials, Club Presidents from across the country, Assistant Governors, District Rotaract Representative, and the College of Governors of District 3220, demonstrating Rotary’s united commitment to Create Lasting Impact through meaningful service.

A parent remarked, “Seeing my child smile after wearing the spectacles is something I will never forget.”

The occasion also strengthened Rotary’s commitment to child safety, with 70 protective helmets distributed to schoolchildren under the Road Safety Project led by the Rotary Club of Sri Jayawardenapura with the generous donation of Upali Perera and Company (U.P. Co).

Thousands of children silently struggle in classrooms simply because they cannot see the blackboard clearly. A simple pair of spectacles can transform not only a child’s education but also their confidence, future, and quality of life. Through “Sharp Eyes Learn Better,” Rotary District 3220 seeks to bridge this gap and ensure that every child has the opportunity to learn without limitations.

“These children now have a fair chance to achieve their full potential,” a teacher commented, emphasszing how clear vision directly supports classroom learning and confidence.

Rotary District 3220 warmly invites individuals, organisations, and corporate partners to join this life-changing national initiative. Such collective efforts can give children the gift of clear vision, safer journeys, and brighter futures, because when a child can see clearly, they can dream bigger, learn better, and build a better tomorrow.
