SOBHA – A Floral Journey presents a refined and thoughtfully curated collection of watercolour and acrylic works by artist Priyadarshinie Karunaratne, offering a quiet yet vivid exploration of colour, form, and emotion. Her compositions reveal a deep sensitivity to the visual richness of Sri Lanka, capturing its many colours, shapes, and hues with both botanical precision and artistic intuition. Through watercolours and acrylics, she brings to life the island’s tropical character, viewed through the dual lenses of a botanist and an artist. This art exhibition was held on 8th and 9th November at JDA Perera Gallery, Horton Place, Colombo.
Priyadarshini’s passion for art first emerged during her undergraduate years, where she specialised in botany and developed an early appreciation for natural detail and organic structure. This creative inclination, long nurtured, blossomed more fully after she stopped full-time work from a demanding corporate career, allowing her to devote her time and energy to artistic expression. Her work now stands as a testament to a lifelong connection between science, nature, and the transformative power of art.
Priyadarshinie has depicted a selection of art that captures many colours, shapes and hues of Sri Lanka. The islands, tropic from a botanical view and an artistic eye, with water colours and acrylics. The exhibition brings together pieces that reflect her attentive study of the natural world, everyday human experience, and the subtle interplay of light and shadow.
Her watercolours highlight fluidity and delicacy, capturing transient moments with precision and restraint. In contrast, the acrylic works introduce depth and texture, revealing stronger tonal structures and a confident contemporary style. Together, they demonstrate a disciplined technique shaped by years of practice SOBHA presents Priyadarshi Karunaratne as an artist whose work blends intuition with clarity, offering viewers a quiet space for reflection. Her paintings are marked by a gentle sensitivity, where colour, form, and subject speak without force, inviting contemplation rather than commanding attention.
Rooted in a scientific understanding of the natural world, her art carries an understated confidence. Each piece translates emotion into visual language, creating an experience that feels both personal and universally accessible.
In addition to the florals, she had a corner with Recycled Art with the principle of Circularity, which was created with discarded items like pieces of jewellery, mirrors, broken glass, pens, etc, which formed beautiful pieces of Art which was appreciated, especially by the new generation as a contemporary mode of art.
Through SOBHA’s presentation, her work emerges as a rare balance of insight and spontaneity. Viewers are encouraged to slow down, observe subtle details, and discover meaning at their own pace. It’s this quiet, transformative power that defines her artistic voice, one that resonates deeply, yet never overwhelms.
