Using a rubber dinghy for rescues

Participants at the Kala Weva training camp
In preparation for the upcoming southwest monsoon season, the Asia Pacific Alliance for Disaster Management Sri Lanka (A-PAD SL) carried out a successful Swift Water Search and Rescue Skill Elevation training on the 5th of April 2025 in Kala Wewa, Galnewa. The training, which saw the participation of nationally and internationally certified SAR members representing the private, public sector and civil society, provided a crucial opportunity for participants to refine their techniques and coordination in swift water rescue scenarios. Emphasising the importance of prioritising safety, the intensive training ensured that responders are adequately prepared to handle emergencies effectively, safeguarding both their own well-being and that of the community.
As part of this training, A-PAD SL incorporated a practical deployment exercise supporting a community-focused programme in Galnewa, organised by the private sector. This deployment provided an opportunity to apply the skills learned during the training, extending valuable support to communities in water-related activities.
The SAR initiative of A-PAD SL underscores the platform’s commitment to strengthening disaster response capabilities in water-related emergencies, which is critical for a flood-prone country like Sri Lanka. By conducting regular training, A-PAD SL aims to build a highly skilled network of responders in line with international standards in SAR, reinforcing safety protocols and drills in preparation for potential flood response deployment. Its commitment to promoting civil-military coordination in disaster response efforts is evident through the training of 160 civil and military personnel in swift water SAR techniques.
