Nearly a Rs 2 Billion Rupees in Community Service Projects Highlight Rotary’s Growing Impact Across Sri Lanka and the Maldives.

At a time when communities across the world continue to grapple with economic uncertainty, climate-related disasters, and social challenges, Rotary International District 3220 demonstrated how volunteer-driven leadership can create meaningful and lasting change.

The 35th District Conference of Rotary International District 3220, representing Sri Lanka and the Maldives, concluded recently in Colombo, bringing together hundreds of Rotarians, business leaders, development professionals, and international guests in a celebration of service, leadership, and community impact.

Held under the theme “Unite for Good,” the conference served not only as Rotary’s premier annual gathering, but also as a showcase of the remarkable achievements delivered across the district during the past year.

What emerged was a compelling story of collective action. Rotary clubs across Sri Lanka and the Maldives have implemented projects valued at nearly Rs 2 billion, touching countless lives through initiatives in healthcare, education, economic empowerment, environmental sustainability, disaster relief, and community development.

A significant focus during the year was the strengthening of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), widely regarded as the backbone of the Sri Lankan economy. Through mentorship programmes, financial literacy initiatives, professional networking, and strategic partnerships, Rotary clubs have contributed towards building resilient businesses and sustainable livelihoods.

The district’s commitment to service was perhaps most visible during the aftermath of Cyclone Ditwah, when Rotarians mobilised rapidly to support affected communities. Working alongside volunteers, partners, and donors, clubs delivered relief, restored hope, and demonstrated the power of coordinated humanitarian action.

The conference also reflected Rotary’s growing relevance beyond traditional service projects. Discussions centred on leadership, economic development, entrepreneurship, social impact, and the importance of collaboration between the public, private, and voluntary sectors. Distinguished speakers from Sri Lanka and overseas shared insights on building stronger communities and creating sustainable solutions to emerging challenges.

International recognition added prestige to the event, with Immediate Past Rotary International President Stephanie A. Urchick attending as Chief Guest and Past Rotary International President K. R. Ravindran joining as a special invitee. Their presence underscored the significance of the work being undertaken within District 3220 and its contribution to Rotary’s global mission.

District Governor Delvin Pereira noted that Rotary’s greatest achievements are measured not by awards or accolades, but by the lives transformed through service. He emphasised that the district’s focus throughout the year had been to build meaningful partnerships, encourage sustainable community interventions, and create long-term impact rather than short-term solutions. He further commended Chairman of the conference Rtn Air Chief Marshall Gagan Bulathsinghala (Rtd) and his team for their efforts in organizing a memorable event that reflected the lasting impact of Rotary.

As the conference drew to a close, the message was clear: in a world facing increasingly complex challenges, service organisations such as Rotary continue to play a vital role in connecting people, mobilising resources, and transforming goodwill into action.

The achievements celebrated at the conference stand as a reminder that when individuals from diverse professions and backgrounds unite around a common purpose, communities thrive, opportunities expand, and hope becomes a reality.

That, perhaps, is the enduring Rotary difference.
