Payoe exemplified integrity, discipline, and compassion throughout an illustrious career in the Sri Lanka Air Force
Widely respected as a leader and mentor, he possessed the rare ability to balance authority with kindness, and decisiveness with fairness
On 18 January 2026 an almsgiving ceremony was held to mark the first death anniversary of the late Air Vice Marshal Prasanna Payoe. It was organised by the late Payoe’s family in solemn remembrance of his life and service.
A distinguished helicopter pilot who rose to the appointment of Chief of Staff, Air Vice Marshal, Payoe exemplified integrity, discipline, and compassion throughout an illustrious career in the Sri Lanka Air Force. Widely respected as a leader and mentor, he possessed the rare ability to balance authority with kindness, and decisiveness with fairness.
He embodied the finest traditions of an officer and a gentleman. Calm under pressure and resolute in duty, he combined professional excellence with quiet humility, earning genuine respect across all ranks. Beyond rank and appointment, he was known for his warmth, approachability, and sincerity, treating colleagues and subordinates alike with dignity and genuine care. His conduct consistently reflected integrity, discipline, and an unwavering commitment to service, the hallmarks of true military leadership.
As a helicopter pilot and Commanding Officer, he led from the front, never asking of others what he himself was unwilling to do. Equally, he was a brother officer in the truest sense, supportive, loyal, and deeply invested in the well-being of those he served alongside. His leadership was marked by clarity of purpose, operational courage, and a sincere concern for the professional and personal development of his officers and airmen. He mentored younger pilots with patience, empathy, and firm guidance, instilling confidence while upholding the highest standards of professionalism.
I cherish many memories of sharing the cockpit with Prasanna. Together we experienced the exhilaration of flight, the camaraderie of the crew room, and moments of quiet banter during VVIP standbys and intermediate stops. In those moments, his presence brought not only professional assurance but also warmth, laughter, and a unique sense of camaraderie that made him an unforgettable companion. His service to the nation, devotion to duty, and compassion toward his fellow officers and airmen remain a guiding light for all who continue to wear the uniform.
To his beloved family, Shyian, Vishanni, and Nishani we offer our heartfelt support and solidarity on this Remembrance Day. The loss of Prasanna is deeply felt by all who knew and loved him, and his memory will forever remain a source of pride and inspiration.
May his memory continue to inspire generations of combat aviators yet to come.
