Blacksmiths in Naula in Matale are on the verge of losing their traditional occupation for cheap imported agri-equipment
The import of agricultural tools and equipment from China almost in unlimited quantities has adversely affected the local market much to the anxiety of blacksmiths.
Blacksmiths in Naula in the Matale district pointed out that the traditional smithy industry in the area which had earned a reputation for sound workmanship from ancient times has declined due to the import of cheap agricultural machinery and tools from China.
They said they had been turning out every piece of equipment and tool used in agriculture from the sickle to the plough.
“ However, the demand for locally made agricultural tools and equipment has declined. Mechanical mowers, hand tractors fitted with ploughshares and mould-boards, knives, and a miscellany of machinery and tools imported from China have expelled us from the market. The farmers who prefer imported tools and equipment reject our products and as a result smithies are facing the threat of closure depriving hundreds of families of traditional blacksmiths of their livelihood”.
“A major issue affecting us is the shortage of firewood. We collect firewood for the furnace to heat iron. Clearing of land for residential purposes has created a shortage of firewood and we are liable to legal action if entered the forest to collect firewood” they said.
Blacksmiths in Naula and Bowathenna in the Matale district expressed concern over the poor treatment given to local industries while giving priority to imports.
