The initiative brought together a panel of distinguished medical professionals to address critical health needs
The Lions Club of Colombo Ceylon Excellence conducted a large scale medical and legal camp in Ambalangoda recently, delivering vital services to over 500 community members.
The initiative, with a project value of Rs. 3 million, was conducted under the guidance of Lions Club of Colombo Ceylon Excellence Advisor, Secretary to the Prime Minister, Lion Pradeep Saputhanthri.
The initiative brought together a panel of medical professionals to address critical health needs. Senior Vice President Lion Dr. Gotabhaya Ranasinghe led a comprehensive Cardiac Clinic and Awareness Programme, while Senior Vice President Lion Dr. Manilka Sumanathilleke spearheaded a Diabetes Screening and Education Clinic, promoting early detection and prevention.
Renowned Surgeon Dr. Nalitha N. Wijesundara and his two juniors Dr. Sathira and Dr. Buddhin Chandrasena conducted specialised Gastroenterology and General Surgery Clinics, offering expert consultations to patients in need. Expanding the scope of care, Board Director Lion Hashini Wijesekara provided essential Psychiatric Services, ensuring attention to mental health. Vision Care Optical Services further enhanced the programme with extensive Eye Screening Services, while Dr. Upali Piyadigama delivered a Dental Clinic and Oral Health Awareness Programme. Dr. Priyanthi Premaratne, Deputy Secretary of College of General Practitioners, Lion Dr. Dulan Kasthuriarachchi, Lion Dr. Angelo Fernando from Lions Club also contributed to the medial camp.
The camp also featured a Free Legal Aid Programme led by President’s Counsel Kaushalya Nawaratne, Vice President of Lions Clubs and former President of the Bar Association, supported by a dedicated team of 35 junior lawyers from his KN Chambers. Senior Attorney-at-Law and former President of Organizational and Professional Association Ruchira Gunasekara extended her expertise, strengthening access to justice for underserved communities.
Beyond medical and legal support, the initiative donated wheelchairs to deserving individuals of the community.
As a boost to youth development, the basketball team of Dharmasoka College, Ambalangoda, received five complete sets of basketball kits.
The success of the programme was powered by strong partnerships and generous sponsorships. Senior Vice President Lion Manuja Hewawasam, Chairman of Royal Nursing Home Pvt Ltd, came forward as the Platinum Sponsor, alongside key contributors including Commercial Credit, Comfri AC, Lady J, Prime Lands, Asiri Surgical Hospitals, Idea, Sethma Pharmacy, Gamini Jayaratne, George Steuart & Company, ADS Studio, Medi Help Hospitals, ENERG1 Battery, and LOLC Finance and KN Chambers.
The initiative was strengthened through collaboration with institutions such as the STEMI Forum, Sri Lanka Medical Association, and the College of General Practitioners of Sri Lanka, together with the Old Boys’ Association of Dharmasoka College, Ambalangoda.
The event was graced by chief guest Lions District Governor Lion Mahesh Boralugoda, alongside distinguished dignitaries including Cabinet Secretary Lion Danushka Sandanayaka and Cabinet Treasurer Lion Samith Mapalagama. The guest of honour was Senior Vice President Lion Manuja Hewawasam, recognised as the highest financial contributor to the Club from 2021 to 2026, whose continued generosity has been instrumental in driving large-scale community initiatives.
The project was spearheaded by Rtn. Lion Ayesh De Silva PMAF MAF, Charter President and Club President (2021–2026/2027) and Additional Cabinet Secretary of Lions Clubs International District 306 D6, while Lion Navodi Seneviratne: Club Deputy Secretary and Deputy Treasurer (2025/2026), serving as Project Secretary, whose coordination and dedication contributed significantly to the success of the programme.
