Kiribathgoda Kelaniya Young Men’s Buddhist Association (YMBA) reached a significant milestone on April 2026, completing 67 years of continuous service to religion and society as it stepped into its 68th year. To commemorate this momentous milestone, the association held its 67th Annual General Meeting on Sunday, April 26 at 3.00pm at the dharma hall of the Sri Sudarshanaramaya Temple in Kiribathgoda.
A legacy rooted in Buddhist revival
The foundation of Buddhist organisations in Sri Lanka dates back to 1880 with the establishment of the Buddhist Theosophical Society. Guided by pioneers such as Anagarika Dharmapala and Colonel Henry Steel Olcott, this movement inspired the formation of several influential societies, including the Maha Bodhi Society and later the YMBA network.
The Kiribathgoda Kelaniya YMBA traces its origins to August 3 1958 when it was founded as the “Sri Kalyani Buddhist Society” at Biyanwila Government Boys’ School. Under the leadership of Mr. Jinadasa Pathinayake and with the support of over 80 participants, the association began its journey inspired by the ideals of Buddhist service. By 1960, the association had secured land and commenced construction of its headquarters. Over the decades, it has evolved into a well-established centre featuring religious, educational and community facilities.
Guided by strong principles
The association continues to operate under five key objectives, which are as follows; Promoting and facilitating the study of Buddhism, encouraging the practice of Buddhist teachings in daily life, fostering unity among the Buddhist community, enhancing moral, cultural and social development, safeguarding and nurturing the Buddha Sasana. In recent years, the association has embraced modernisation while preserving its core values. Major developments include the renovation of its main hall into a fully air-conditioned auditorium and the adoption of digital systems for administration and communication. Its commitment to social service remains a defining feature. The association operates elderly care facilities, maintains a well-utilised public library with a growing membership and conducts free educational and wellness programmes, such as English classes and yoga sessions for the community.
Looking ahead
As it celebrates 67 years of dedicated service, the Kiribathgoda Kelaniya YMBA stands as a symbol of resilience, unity, and progressive community leadership.
