Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai, the 52nd Chief Justice (CJ) of India, is to deliver the annual Sujata Jayawardena Memorial Oration for this year (2026), themed ‘In a True Democracy, is Parliament Supreme?’ on March 28 (Saturday) at 6 p.m. at the BMICH.

The Annual Sujata Jayawardena Memorial Oration, being a premier annual event of the University of Colombo is hosted for the 19th consecutive year by the Alumni Association University of Colombo, in memory of its illustrious Past President, the late Sujata Jayawardena, who rendered immense service to the University of Colombo.

Past orators have been Prof. Chandra Wickramasinghe, Jayantha Dhanapala, Ambassador Robert O. Blake Jr., Judge C.G. Weeramantry, Vidyajothi Prof. Arjuna Aluwihare, former President’s Secreatary Lalith Weeratunga, former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, former Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe, former Secretary of the Treasury Dr. P.B. Jayasundara, Prof. Sudarshan Seneviratne, Emeritus Prof. Carlo Fonseka, former President Ranil Wickremesinghe, Chinese Ambassador Yi Xianliang, Indian High Commissioner Taranjit Singh Sandhu, Tony Weerasinghe, Prof. Neelika Malavige, Dr. Indrajit Coomaraswamy and Dr. Shashi Tharoor.
