The students of Gateway College, Negombo,  brought new life to a literary classic with their contemporary musical adaptation of Pride and Prejudice, based on the beloved novel by Jane Austen.

Blending modern musical elements with the elegance of the Regency era, the production was a vibrant and creative interpretation that showcased both the talent and dedication of the young performers.

From the moment the curtain rose, the audience was drawn into the world of Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy, recreated through a lively stage design and a visually engaging backdrop. The projected countryside garden scenes created an immersive atmosphere that complemented the story’s setting while allowing the actors’ performances to take centre stage.

One of the highlights of the production was its original score and lyrics, composed specifically for the musical. The songs added emotional depth to the narrative, transforming key moments of tension, humour, and romance into memorable musical performances. The cast handled these musical numbers with confidence and enthusiasm, demonstrating impressive vocal ability and stage presence.

The ensemble work was particularly commendable. The actresses portraying Elizabeth’s circle brought energy and charm to the stage, their interactions capturing the wit and social dynamics that make Austen’s story so enduring. Their synchronised movements and expressive reactions added both humour and authenticity to the scenes.Equally notable was the staging and character contrast. For instance, while the elegant young ladies conversed and exchanged witty remarks on the sofa, Mrs Bennet  arranging flowers added visual storytelling and emotionally  nuanced tension.

Particularly noteworthy were  Mr. and Mrs Bennet, Bingley, Darcy,  Elizabeth, Jane and the very naughty Lydia complemented by delightful cameo performances by Mr. Collins and the violin- playing butler.

The production also benefited from thoughtful costuming. The dresses, ranging from soft pastels to vibrant tones, helped define the personalities of the characters while maintaining a modern theatrical flair. Combined with effective lighting and simple yet purposeful props, the visual presentation was polished and engaging. Just a thought -- perhaps some suitable snippets of background music, even a live instrument,  during the brief scene changes would have rounded up the experience.

However, what made this performance truly special was the confidence and commitment of the student cast. Each performer contributed to the overall energy of the show, and their passion for the story was evident throughout the performance. The musical format allowed the students to explore both dramatic acting and expressive singing, creating a dynamic and entertaining stage experience.

In adapting a classic novel into a contemporary musical, Gateway College’s students demonstrated creativity, teamwork, and impressive artistic ability. Their interpretation honored Jane Austen’s timeless themes of love, pride, misunderstanding, and personal transformation, while presenting them in a fresh and lively way for a modern audience.

Overall, the production was a delightful celebration of literature, music, and youthful talent — proof that even a centuries-old story can feel wonderfully alive and timely when reimagined with creativity and enthusiasm.
