For health stand with science

What I’ve Learned About Health Beyond Hospitals

On this World Health Day (7 April), we are reminded of a simple yet powerful truth: health is not static, and neither are the challenges we face. This year’s theme, ‘Together for Health. Stand with Science’ calls on us not just to trust science, but to actively use it to navigate an increasingly complex world.

Science in health extends beyond labs and hospitals. It shapes how people think, understand risks, and make daily decisions. It is not limited to policymakers; it influences everyone. Today’s health threats are complex and linked.

Maternal and newborn health shows this urgency. With lower fertility and better survival, each pregnancy carries greater weight. Yet in 2023, about 260,000 women died from pregnancy-related causes, many preventable through timely, evidence-based care. This calls for precise, data-driven systems that ensure access and quality.

Gender-based violence is also evolving. Alongside physical harm, online abuse and technology-facilitated violence are rising, leaving deep mental impacts. Addressing this requires coordinated approaches that combine mental health, digital safety, and survivor-focused care.

At the same time, longer life expectancy has increased non-communicable diseases such as diabetes and heart conditions. In Sri Lanka, nearly 13.9% of mothers develop diabetes during pregnancy, reflecting lifestyle risks. Prevention remains critical. Early action and healthier living reduce disease and long-term costs. Data and research guide smarter policies, while digital tools improve access and response. Still, gaps persist, especially in women’s health research. This World Health Day, let us reaffirm our commitment to science, not as an abstract concept, but as a practical tool for healthier lives and stronger communities. Let us invest in prevention, embrace innovation, and ensure that our responses evolve as the challenges we face. Because, science is not just about knowledge; it is about ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to live healthy, dignified lives, and that no one is left behind.
