The Wesley College Old Boys’ Union (OBU) has flourished under the leadership of Capt. Navin De Silva, whose tenure as President from 2023 to 2025 has been nothing short of extraordinary. As he prepares to conclude his presidency on March 8, 2025, it is a moment to reflect on the remarkable journey that has seen the OBU reach new heights. A man of vision, commitment, and unwavering dedication, Capt. De Silva has not only upheld the traditions of Wesley College but has also been instrumental in shaping its future. His contributions, particularly during the historic 150th Sesquicentennial celebrations, have left an indelible mark on the institution and its global fraternity of old boys.
During his presidency, Capt. De Silva spearheaded several ambitious projects that have significantly enriched the college’s infrastructure and strengthened the bonds of the Wesleyite community. Among his many notable achievements is the renovation of the College Chapel and Pavilion, alongside the reconstruction of the scoreboard—initiatives that have enhanced both the spiritual and sporting life of the school. His efforts extended beyond mere oversight; Capt. De Silva personally contributed financially, actively engaged in project management, and galvanised local and overseas old boys to join hands in these endeavours. His relentless drive to acknowledge the efforts of all contributors underscores his belief in unity and collective progress. Furthermore, securing a 30-year lease extension for the College grounds has ensured the continuation of Wesley’s sporting traditions for future generations.
Capt. Navin De Silva’s relentless dedication to the Pavilion Project stands as a hallmark of his presidency. Committed to restoring the Pavilion to a grand, Country Club-style facility, a long-cherished dream of both old and present Wesleyites, he spared no effort in rallying support. Leaving no stone unturned, he mobilised the local Old Boys’ community while embarking on a global mission to engage Wesleyites across continents. From Australia to the UK, the Middle East to North America, he personally inspired the alumni to contribute, securing both financial and moral support. His leadership extended beyond fundraising; he played a hands-on role in project oversight, ensuring every detail reflected Wesley’s rich heritage. Today, the restored Pavilion stands as a testament to his vision, perseverance, and the collective strength of the Wesleyite fraternity, a lasting legacy for generations to come.
A defining aspect of Capt. De Silva’s tenure was his masterful orchestration of Wesley’s Sesquicentennial celebrations. The milestone was commemorated with grandeur and deep sentiment through a series of events such as the “Double Blue Ball” and the “Black Tie Sit-down Dinner”, which not only honoured the College’s illustrious legacy but also strengthened the camaraderie among old boys across generations. The issuance of a special commemorative silver coin and an exclusive necktie served as lasting symbols of this historic occasion, while the planting of 150 trees signified the OBU’s dedication to environmental sustainability and long-term stewardship.
Capt. De Silva’s tenure also saw a renewed focus on fostering a sense of unity and engagement among the old boys. Events such as the OBU/OWSC Christmas Party, the OBU Day Out in Galle, and the Christian Ministry Alumni Reunion provided platforms for old boys to reconnect, celebrate their shared heritage, and contribute to the ongoing growth of the College. These gatherings served as reminders of the enduring spirit of Wesley, binding generations together through tradition and fellowship.
To ensure the OBU’s continued effectiveness, Capt. De Silva took decisive steps towards organizational development, including the vital task of updating the OBU Constitution. This move has fortified the governance structure of the Union, ensuring that it remains a dynamic and responsive entity that will continue to serve the interests of Wesleyites for years to come.
As Capt. Navin De Silva prepares to bid farewell to his presidency, he leaves behind a legacy of progress, unity, and excellence. His leadership has not only strengthened the Old Boys’ Union but has also reinforced the bond between past and present Wesleyites, ensuring that the institution’s spirit remains vibrant and its future bright. His tenure stands as a testament to the power of dedicated service, and as the baton passes to the next leader, Wesley College and its global community of old boys will forever be grateful for the vision, passion, and tireless commitment that Capt. De Silva brought to his role.
