The nation mourns the departure of a true officer and gentleman, a stalwart figure whose career in the Sri Lankan Army spanned more than two decades, leaving an indelible mark on the institution he loved and served. Brigadier Vipul Boteju (Retd), a name synonymous with disciplined command, uncompromising integrity, and quiet patriotism, passed away on November 25, 2025, at the Military Hospital Narahenpita, concluding an illustrious life that served as a towering example for generations of soldiers. His story is not merely a record of appointments and promotions but a testament to how character and commitment can shape the destiny of a nation’s defence forces.

Born on May 1, 1949, into a well-reputed family residing in Colombo 7, the most prestigious location in Sri Lanka, the young Vipul Boteju was destined for distinction. His formative years were spent within the hallowed grounds of Royal College, Colombo, an institution globally recognised for nurturing the country’s future leaders. At Royal, he displayed a dual mastery, excelling not only in the demanding sphere of academics but also proving himself an outstanding sportsman. This early demonstration of balance—the sharp intellect paired with robust physical prowess and team spirit—was the perfect crucible for the military leader he would become, laying the foundation for his unwavering dedication and all-around competence.

The formal chapter of his military saga began shortly after concluding his school education. On May 3, 1969, young Vipul Boteju was enlisted as an Officer Cadet under Intake 2 of the esteemed Sri Lanka Military Academy (SLMA) in Diyatalawa. This moment marked a profound commitment, setting him upon the path of a true military leader and a devoted public servant. After rigorously completing his basic military training, his competence was recognised with his commissioning as a Second Lieutenant on September 2, 1970. He was subsequently posted to one of the Army’s most respected and storied formations: the Gemunu Watch. As one of the oldest fighting battalions, the Gemunu Watch, or ‘GW’, has consistently served as a leading fighting regiment during conflicts both in the north and the south, and it was here that 2nd Lieutenant Boteju began to forge his reputation in the heat of service.

His dedication was immediately apparent and continually rewarded. In recognition of the absolute commitment, competence, and loyalty he displayed from the outset, Second Lieutenant Vipul Boteju rapidly ascended the ranks. He was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on March 2, 1972, then Captain on March 2, 1975, and achieved the rank of Major on June 1, 1980. These swift advancements underscored not just his ability to execute orders but his innate capacity to command and inspire. His inspiring leadership, marked by clarity and effectiveness, was further rewarded with his promotion to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel on March 15, 1987. A mere two and a half years later, in a testament to his high value and operational experience, he was promoted to the senior rank of Brigadier on September 17, 1989, a rank he held with immense pride and distinction until his honourable retirement from the Sri Lanka Army.

During his illustrious military career, Brigadier Boteju held many pivotal appointments, each one demanding a high degree of tactical acumen and administrative efficiency. His service encompassed both instruction and high command. He performed a crucial Staff Officer Grade 2 role at the Non-Commissioned Officers’ Training School, shaping the backbone of the future fighting force. He also served as an Officer Instructor at the Combat Training School in Ampara, a role where he directly imparted tactical knowledge and the ethos of military professionalism to junior officers, multiplying his positive influence across the Army. His command culminated in the vital role of Commanding Officer of the 1st Battalion, the Gemunu Watch. Under his direct leadership, the unit excelled, reflecting his meticulous standards and exemplary leadership.

Crucially, Brigadier Boteju was not a leader who directed from the sidelines; he actively participated in the nation’s pivotal military engagements. He took an active and leading part in the Vadamarachchi operation, one of the main offensive operations conducted against terrorists in the 1980s. His presence and bravery on the front lines during such a critical period solidified his reputation as a courageous and pragmatic commander whose judgement could be relied upon when the stakes were highest.

The Brigadier’s commitment to self-improvement and institutional development was evident in his continuous pursuit of knowledge. Throughout his career, he followed a number of intensive local and overseas courses at different stages, ensuring his strategic thinking remained current with global military standards. The array of courses he mastered speaks volumes of his diverse expertise: the Tactics and Staff Officer Course; the Junior Command Course in India; the prestigious Company Commander’s Course in the United Kingdom; the Command and Staff Course in Bangladesh; the rigorous Commando Course in India; and the Battalion Support Weapon Course, also in India. He did not simply accumulate certifications; he diligently imparted the vast and varied knowledge gained for the overall betterment and modernisation of the Sri Lanka Army, investing his international insights directly into the future readiness of the Motherland’s forces.

In honour and recognition of the exemplary service rendered to the Army and the nation, Brigadier Vipul Boteju was the recipient of several distinguished decorations. These medals not only reflect his operational bravery but also his long and unblemished service record. Among the honours bestowed upon him were the prestigious Rana Wickrama Padakkama and the Rana Sura Padakkama medals recognising gallantry and distinguished conduct in the face of the enemy. Further recognition included the Purnabhumi Padakkama, the Vadamarachchi Operation Medal (for his frontline participation), the Sri Lanka Army 25th Anniversary Medal, the Ceylon Armed Services Long Service Medal, and the President’s Inauguration Medal. Each medal is a glittering fragment of his legacy.

Yet, beyond the ribbons and the stars of his rank, the most enduring part of Brigadier Boteju’s reputation rests on his sheer force of character. To the officers and other ranks of the Gemunu Watch, he was a true source of encouragement and inspiration. He served the Army and the country with utmost dedication, displaying exemplary qualities as an Officer and a Gentleman during his illustrious military career of nearly 21 years.

He stood out as one of the most popular officers and gentlemen, possessing the kind of great leadership and officer qualities the Sri Lanka Army has ever produced. In a measure of his profound professional standing, he was often considered second only to the late General Denzil Kobbekaduwa, a comparison that places him in the highest pantheon of the nation’s military heroes. This comparison was earned not just through battlefield success, but through a deeply ingrained moral code. He was known for being one of the most decent and disciplined officers who possessed a rare and unwavering moral fortitude.

This unwavering principle was perhaps the defining trait of his career: he was one who would never bow down to illegal and unsound political instructions or compromise with the vested interests of politicians. It is a sad yet noble truth that it was this brilliant officer’s refusal to compromise his integrity, his adherence to the highest military ethos over political expediency, that ultimately led him to say farewell to the great organisation he served so well. His early departure, far from being a defeat, was a final, powerful demonstration that honour and duty stand above all else.

Brigadier Vipul Boteju (Retd) has concluded his final posting. His legacy of discipline, professionalism, and integrity will remain a timeless beacon for generations of soldiers of the Sri Lanka Army, particularly within the ranks of the Gemunu Watch.

The last rites of late Brigadier Vipul Boteju (Retd) will be held at 1600 hours on November 27, 2025, at the General Cemetery, Borella, with the full and solemn military honours he so richly deserves.

Brigadier Vipul Boteju, though you have departed, your name and the exceptional service rendered to the Sri Lanka Army and the nation will remain forever imprinted in our hearts, serving as the eternal standard of a great patriot of Mother Lanka.
