The Felicitation Ceremony of Lieutenant General Lasantha Rodrigo on his appointment as the 25th Commander of the Sri Lanka Army was held yesterday at the St. Benedict’s College Quadrangle.
This year marks the 160th anniversary of the school’s remarkable legacy, with the ascension of the Lieutenant General to such a prestigious rank adding to the pride of all Benedictines. With their green and white flag held high in honour, the school extended a grand welcome to the Commander. The event commenced with the traditional lighting of the oil lamp and an opening prayer led by Rev. Bro. Pravin Vaz. “From his former years at St. Benedict’s College to his rise as the Nation’s highest-ranking military officer, Lieutenant General Rodrigo has shown the true essence of leadership and unwavering dedication to the people of Sri Lanka. Leading the nation’s army is not merely a position of authority but a solemn duty to protect the people” Rev. Bro. Pravin Vaz said, while emphasising that the Commander’s journey stands as a beacon of inspiration to all young Benedictines.
During his welcome address, Rev. Dr. Pubudu Rajapaksha, Director of St. Benedict’s College extended his heartfelt congratulations to the School’s distinguished Alumni, Lieutenant General Rodrigo along with Major General Nanayakkara, Major General Sylvester Perera, and Major General Damian Weerasinghe who were also present at the momentous occasion. “These men have not only excelled in their service to the country but have also brought immense honour to their Alma mater, serving as testimony to the world-class education and values this institution instils in its students”, Rev. Dr. Rajapaksha remarked and further shared the school’s history of producing outstanding leaders in the military, noting that the 12th Commander of the Sri Lanka Army, General Cecil Waidyaratne was also a proud Benedictine.
Sriyal De Silva, D.H.P of the 1989 Batch shared a nostalgic video presentation that took the audience on a walk down memory lane, portraying the strong bond between the batchmates. Interestingly, the video also featured the Commander and the other Major Generals, who were invited to the event, coincidentally from the same batch. “They were all-rounders, brilliant students and athletes. Lieutenant General Rodrigo was a prefect and a renowned rugby player.” Sriyal De Silva reflected as he spoke about all their character traits and past achievements.
Lieutenant General Rodrigo commenced his speech with some witty remarks from his childhood that young students can relate to. He expressed his gratitude to all those who played a role in his journey and stated “This institution holds a special place in my heart since I not only received an education but also the values and principles that shaped my life. Remember that greatness is built on your hard work and discipline, embrace every challenge and stay true to your values.” The Lieutenant General left the students with these words of advice and concluded with glad tidings, announcing that he will be donating LKR 1 million for the upcoming technology building.
During his speech, the College Head Prefect, Aaron Johnpillai addressed the Lieutenant General on behalf of the school “In your accomplishments, we find inspiration and look up to you as a guiding light in leaving a lasting impact on society.”
A Tribute of gratitude to the esteemed Chief Guest, along with tokens of appreciation were presented to the other distinguished officers in attendance.
Following the performances by the Eastern Music Troupe and the vote of thanks delivered by Titus Withanage, the event concluded with the inauguration of the newly renovated ICT lab, fully furnished through the generous donations of Rohan De Silva, Group Chairman of McLarens Holdings Limited.
