“Mathematics is all about precision; it’s the foundation from which other activities are often developed in a well-aligned and calculated manner.” “I started by practising every day, doing a few sums each morning to keep it in check. Nithya Shree Balasubramanian is a 23-year-old girl from India who arrived with her family to share the extraordinary talent she possesses. Nithya Shree has the ability to mentally multiply large numbers, extending up to five digits, without the need for a calculator. Her mathematical prowess has indeed made her stand out as an exceptional individual in the realm of mental arithmetic.
To multiply large numbers in the mind, one must break the numbers down into smaller parts using distributive property, and mental shortcuts such as rounding. Cross multiplication and familiar patterns also help simplify the process. With practice, these methods enable quick and precise calculations without needing a calculator.
The key to her abilities
Nithya Shree shared that she began developing this skill at the age of 13, driven by a desire to impress her father and prove that she could surpass limits, even at such a young age. Reflecting on how she gradually developed this ability, she explained, “I started by practising every day, doing a few sums each morning to keep it in check. After about 2 to 3 years, I was able to multiply numbers with up to five digits. I avoid mentally reading out numbers as most people do since it overcomplicates things. For instance, the number 7 would just be ‘7’ in my mind, not ‘seven’. This simplification helps me process the numbers quicker and complete the calculation in the shortest time possible. I don’t dwell on the details of multiplication or addition; I merely focus on compressing the process and efficiently making the sum.”
Nithya Shree is truly a living embodiment of the aphorism ‘practice makes perfect.’ She explained that mastering this skill has not only improved her ability to perform complex calculations but also her overall efficiency in day-to-day activities.
“I can remember things better and learn faster compared to most people, which was an observation by my father. I recently picked up the guitar and flute quite fast too. People often give up on hobbies or certain activities they want to pursue if the learning process becomes difficult or takes up too much time. However, since I’ve become a fast learner now, I find great joy in exploring all the things that interest me.” She stated while crediting her success to the nurturing environment in which she was raised. “The main reason I’ve come so far is because I was fortunate enough to grow up in a peaceful learning environment that naturally fosters this type of intelligence. Even my father, who previously worked in the service industry, retired to spend more time with us and focus on our personal growth,” she added.

Nithya Shree further mentioned that she began practicing meditation and yoga to enhance both her physical and mental well-being, a routine that has proven to be highly beneficial. She explained, “Mathematics is all about precision; it’s the foundation from which other activities are often developed in a well-aligned and calculated manner.”
Her father’s role in her development
Her father, Balasubramanian Kanthaiah, affirmed her transformation by sharing his observations over the years. “My daughter used to make frequent mistakes and was rather forgetful, but she has changed so profoundly that everything she does is now calculated. I can assign her any task without worrying about how she’ll handle it. That’s how much confidence I have in her abilities. I wouldn’t even describe her as a fast learner; she’s an instant learner, and it’s all thanks to her mathematical skill. Moreover, this is only one of the countless talents a girl can possess when she is surrounded by loving and supportive individuals,” he remarked.
The family’s aspiring goal
On a special note, Nithya Shree and her family travelled to Sri Lanka not only to share her extraordinary talent but also to spread a crucial message to the world. Kanthaiah shared their aspirations, saying, “We hope to represent the Indian government in the future, especially in promoting women and child empowerment across different nations. Our goal is to show the world what is possible and how such remarkable skills can be developed. We seek to inspire the younger generation, and eventually pave the way for youth leaders.”
He emphasised that a peaceful, family-oriented environment plays an important role in fostering various forms of intelligence. “This kind of development is a natural byproduct of being raised in a nurturing, family-centered atmosphere. Race, religion, or nationality is irrelevant when it comes to intellectual growth. What truly matters is a peaceful, supportive environment that promotes mental clarity and peace of mind,” he explained.

Kanthaiah further highlighted the importance of traditions, noting that adhering to one’s cultural roots can be pivotal in a child’s development. “Our customs and traditions, passed down through generations, are the result of years of sacrifice and wisdom from our ancestors. These practices are not just about preserving heritage—they are deeply intertwined with nurturing talents and skills in the next generation,” he remarked.
In essence, the Balasubramanian family’s mission is to inspire the youth to recognise the power of a harmonious, family-centric life, grounded in culture and tradition, which is essential for the growth of a well-rounded individual with exceptional abilities.
