With a fresh COVID-19 variant spreading across several countries, Sri Lanka is ramping up its precautionary efforts to prevent a domestic outbreak.

“We’ve stepped up testing to stay ahead of the curve,” Health Ministry Secretary Dr. Anil Jasinghe said yesterday.

“As such, PCR testing has been intensified at key hospitals across the island. Facilities equipped with PCR testing capabilities are now on high alert,” he said.

“We’ve also instructed hospitals to increase surveillance on patients presenting with fever and respiratory symptoms, as early detection is our best defence,” he added.  While confirming that Sri Lanka will continue to monitor the situation closely, Dr. Jasinghe said there are currently no plans to impose immediate restrictions.

Furthermore, the Ministry has advised the public to remain vigilant but not alarmed. “Masking in crowded places, maintaining hygiene, and getting booster shots remain essential preventive steps,” Dr. Jasinghe reminded.

Meanwhile, a senior official from the Ministry of Health reassured the public that Sri Lanka currently holds an adequate supply of PCR testing kits.

“If any need arises, we’ll import more,” the official added.
