Clarence Rhythm of the Guitar

Clarence: Rhythm of the Guitar is more than just a film — it’s a love letter to a man who changed the course of Sinhala music. Produced by Thusitha Wijayasena, this musical drama tells the story of Clarence Wijewardena, the Father of Sinhala Pop, who electrified the local music scene in the 1960s with the introduction of the electric guitar.

But behind the spotlight was a man caught between the intoxicating pull of fame and the complexities of love. As his personal and professional lives collided in the 1970s, Clarence navigated a world where passion, heartbreak, rebellion, and rhythm all demanded centre stage. The film captures not only his musical genius but also the price of following one’s calling.

In London, the response has been electric. Screenings — now spread across more than ten venues, including Wales — have sold out within hours, proving that the Sri Lankan diaspora is hungry for quality entertainment from home. For many in the audience, Clarence’s songs are woven into the fabric of their youth, and hearing them again on the big screen is pure joy. The toe-tapping soundtrack transports viewers to a halcyon era, with familiar guitar riffs stirring both smiles and sing-alongs.

Since the film’s release, Clarence’s old interviews have been circulating on social media, offering fans — and a new generation — the chance to hear the musician in his own words. The wave of nostalgia has been powerful.

Yet, as with any biopic, the bouquets come with brickbats. Some fans have flagged factual inaccuracies, while others have taken aim at the casting, particularly the choice of actress for the role of Indrani Perera. One of the most pointed criticisms has been that she bore little resemblance to the beloved singer, a decision that jarred with purists.

These criticisms, however, have done little to dent the film’s popularity. If anything, the conversation has kept it in the public eye, sparking debates about the balance between creative licence and historical fidelity. Director’s choices aside, Rhythm of the Guitar remains a heartfelt tribute that captures the spirit of a man whose music continues to inspire decades after his passing.

The cinematography leans into warmth and vibrancy, pairing well with the upbeat musical numbers. The pacing occasionally falters, but the soundtrack keeps the energy alive, anchoring the narrative in the sound that made Clarence a household name.

Clarence: Rhythm of the Guitar is an affectionate, music-filled celebration — imperfect in places but brimming with soul. For fans, it’s a joyous reunion with an old friend; for newcomers, it’s an invitation to discover a legend who strummed his way into the heart of a nation.
