President Gotabaya Rajapaksa said the country must move towards prosperity by adhering to a lifestyle that is in harmony with nature and based on green agriculture.

In his Thai Pongal message, the President said it is the aspiration of the majority of Sri Lankans to see the success of the national policy for green agriculture.

"I firmly believe that this Thai Pongal season will provide much inspiration towards achieving this. This year too, you should all have the opportunity to celebrate Thai Pongal in accordance with health guidelines in a way that protects you and your loved ones," he said.

"Thai Pongal is a special religious and cultural festival of Hindu devotees dedicated to pay homage to the Sun God for safeguarding their agricultural fields and providing a bountiful harvest. I am extremely pleased to extend my best wishes to our fellow Hindu brethren who celebrate this festival along with Hindu devotees across the world.

It is the belief of the Hindu people that holding the Thai Pongal festival in a traditional and successful manner will bring blessings and protection from the Sun God for an abundant harvest in the future.

The rituals performed by the Hindu devotees wishing prosperity have always been ingrained in Sri Lankan society since time immemorial. All Sri Lankans who inherit a culture based on an agrarian economy look forward to Thai Pongal with great respect," he said

In 1948 we were a organic based agro nation. So were the rest of the world. However, life expectancy in 1950 was around 59 to 60 years. Now the world is a chemical fertiliser based food industry. The life expectancy is around 80years. So there is no money.

in 1948 we had less heart ,kidney and liver break downs but now? yes money is with wealthy medical mafia .and the soil quality ? see the soil quality of then and now ? if we continue with chemicals our soil will not be suitable for vegetation .climate change and other impact also reason for chemical use ,so this is a welcome .just learn to appreciate the good among all the bad that we have to criticize

Is the agriculture only way to achieve the prosperity? Will bellyful diets guarantee the development of a nation? Let's follow the self-sufficiency policies of the ancient periods of Sri Lanka, if you say 'yes' to both of them!

Sri Lanka's have become lazy bums. Waiting for everything to be imported and brought to their feet, In one way we prefer if this country is given over to some other country to be run for about 50 years.
