President Ranil Wickremesinghe today denied reports which said a sum of Rs. 400 million has been allocated out of state funds to renovate the residence of Former Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa.

The President was responding to an allegation raised by SJB MP Rohana Bandara in the House today.

“We have not spent either Rs. 400 million or just four rupees to renovate the residence of Mr. Rajapaksa. Nevertheless, we are legally bound to look after former Presidents and their widows,” Mr. Wickremesinghe said.

Earlier MP Bandara questioned as to whether rain water is seeping through roof of Mr. Rajapaksa’s residence. (Yohan Perera and Ajith Siriwardana)

CAN ANYONE BELIEVE THIS INDIVIDUAL?? Unless proof otherwise is shown the accusation stands. MM

So based on the Milton theory, it is guilty until proven innocent ! Anyone can concoct any rabid story and it it should be held true until proven otherwise. A great pastime for the otherwise useless opposition parliamentarians. Worthy to note that the member making the allegation hadn't anything to say after the Finance Minister's rebuttal.

There is a difference between spending and allocating funds.

@bewildered the ‘finance minister’s rebuttal’ doesn’t mean anything. He said they didn’t pay either 4 rupees or 400 million rupees, which means they could have paid any sum in between or more. Remember that Ranil is a cunning old fox and MR’s close buddy. Only low IQ buffoons like you get fooled.

It would have been better if the person accusing must have the proof in their hand, otherwise no one believes what is said in the parliament.

All Ex Presidents and or Ex Ministers who have gained wealth in any shape or form by ill gotten means bringing the country down to the level it is in presently, should be first brought before a court of law, tried and justice got for the people of Sri Lanka. As for maintaining the dishonest cheats and thieves, they should fund their own retirement and safety.

Ranil Wickramasinghe too expects big sum to repair his old house. That is why he got it burnt.

These are the kinds of benefits that need to be trimmed as part of IMF deal. Give ex Presidents and their windows one amount per year as a pension and they must look after themselves … like real people! The public purse shouldn’t be used to renovate or repair their palatial residences.

    Ranjan Thursday, 01 September 2022 09:14 AM

400M who? Who has to pay for it? The Prez, MPs, Ministers or the voted people? Who is going to approve it? From where?
