President Ranil Wickremesinghe who is currently in the United Kingdom invited the Sri Lankans living there to join the new investment opportunities created in Sri Lanka, President’s Media Division said.

The visiting President made this remarks when he met with the Sri Lankan Diaspora in Britain on Monday.

Many Sri Lankan businessmen, investors and professionals living in Britain attended the meeting organised by the Sri Lankan High Commission in Britain.

President Ranil Wickremesinghe explained the future plans of the new government of Sri Lanka and invited the Sri Lankans living there to join the new investment opportunities created in Sri Lanka.

The President also commented on winning future challenges as a Commonwealth country under the leadership of the new King of Britain.

“It’s not a secret that we are all broke as a country. We have to pull ourselves up by our bootstraps. We have already started discussions with the IMF and staff level agreement is there. We have to talk to India, China and Japan and to the private creditors. While we look at our issues of debt, we also have to repay what we have borrowed. This means we need 25 years from now to 2048."

Ask the question, Why Indian Prime Minister did not go to London for the queen’s funeral . Because he knows it is a shame to honour the royal family in whose name all the atrocities were committed in the British Empire.

Kanishka Dias Wednesday, 21 September 2022 09:25 AM

Well, the Indian President was there. She is the Head of State

    Dee Wednesday, 21 September 2022 01:14 PM

Did you study in a local uni? Which village you from? Deep south?

    Tamil Tuesday, 20 September 2022 09:36 PM

Oh dear this is by gone wisdom by our political leaders who shed crocodile tears when they encounter difficulties ..why did not do this in 2009 when war ended ..it has been a human sense of honour once war ended to unite all communities in Sri Lanka instead what did some of our political leaders ? They came out war euphoria and danced on the streets as if they have fully resolved this ethnic tension. You have won the war but have not won the hearts and feeling of Tamil community and there are war scars in the minds and hearts of Tamil community .still some political presioners are behind the bar..why can't you heal all this if you want to ask Tamils to come and invest . More than one million Sri Lankan Tamils live in Europe and they must help the country but some barriers are still there ..please remove them and extend them the hands of mercy and kindness not revenge and hasted . Then this nation could be a paradise once more

    Dee Wednesday, 21 September 2022 08:17 AM

Don't be racist! Sri Lanka diaspora in UK mean people from all languages and religious beliefs. The country is not progressing because of the attitude of people such as you!

    Tamil Wednesday, 21 September 2022 02:02 PM

Dear Mr Dee . No Tamil nor any other ethnic minorities pay for the description of this beautiful island ..Entire Tamil diaspora community in Europe wants to help to rebuild this country and yet after the war some of our political leaders utterly failed to win the hearts and minds of ethnic minorities instead of embracing them communal hated is spread among all communities in Sri Lanka. You know all this..Ask your heart consciousness to tell us if any meaningful action has been taken by successive governments .. they did not have any empathy and sympathy for minorities in Sri Lanka .

    Mandayan Tuesday, 20 September 2022 10:06 PM

@Sri Lankan: Don’t make ignorant comments and read and update yourself: Only head of states were invited. For Canada, Australia and New Zealand etc, Queen EII was the head of state and do PMs attended. So that you now know, head of state of Indian and SL visited.

    Mandayan Tuesday, 20 September 2022 10:27 PM

You the UNPers burned the properties in 1983 and sent them packing and another party SLPP has relations with Uganda which did the same for Asians there in 1970s. After economic disasters of their mega follies, both countries beg the return of diasporas. But remember they are used to do businesses in countries where there is no corruptions and until Sri Lanka ensures that, expects no investment.

Harvesting seasn for Modi Tuesday, 20 September 2022 10:35 PM

Sri Lankan! Please don't take the example of Modi. This is the time of election for Modi. Will he leave this opportunity to spread race/religion hate mongering. That is his bread and butter. He is not going to leave this harvesting of votes season

Former citizen Tuesday, 20 September 2022 10:39 PM

PM Get rid of government, customs, exercise etc RED tapes. Streamline services and make investor friendly We will invest.

    GHT Tuesday, 20 September 2022 10:53 PM

As long as we depend on INDIA, a creator of LTTE, China will never come to rescue us anymore. Neither the US nor the EU will work genuinely to enhance economy.

    Quolp Tuesday, 20 September 2022 11:06 PM

This country will no longer be a United Sri Lanka if you call LTTE community to invest in Sri Lanka which had been under TERRORISM for more than 30 years, and which fought well

    ACA Tuesday, 20 September 2022 11:56 PM

Sri Lankan India was represented by the head of state, the president. That is call diplomatic protocol.

Rajan Gunaseelan Wednesday, 21 September 2022 01:49 AM

Majority of the diaspora he is aiming at are Tamils. They were driven out of Sri Lanka by successive Sri Lankan Govts' policies favouring the Sinhala people. Even after the defeat of Tamil rebellion in 2009 SL Govt continues with the same policies with many innocent Tamils in jail. Now this shameless man goes begging from those Tamils who were driven out.

    vithura Wednesday, 21 September 2022 02:19 AM

Talk is cheap, he has to walk the talk to show that he means business. For starters he can implement the 13th amendment in full in letter and spirit and demonstrate the government's sincerity and its commitment to the rule of law, which in turn would open the floodgates of inward investment from the diaspora.

    Reformist Wednesday, 21 September 2022 02:24 AM

Man, first set up an example by removing criminals and heavily corrupt people from your cabinet and State ministries. Secondly, punish public servants and politicians who demand bribes from investors. Why did you appoint sleeping Siripalaa as a Minister when he got accused by a Japanese company of demanding a bribe? Did your hear the story of Google balloon project? Do you think these are good examples for investors to come to SL? As if investors do not have any other good countries to go.

    Ram Wednesday, 21 September 2022 02:34 AM

Who will want to come from UK to rough out with the present shortages

Sath Tharma Wednesday, 21 September 2022 02:58 AM

Well said Tamil. You hit the nail on the head. These politicians where were they after 2009. Mahinda promised to solve the ethnic issue by giving more autonomy to the province's. He promised the now famous for remarks he made to the world 'I will go beyond 13th a.endment. 13 , he said to the International Community to help end the war. Where did all those promises go after 2009? India and the International Community should not believe the Sri Lankan rulers. They are very deceitful. The Sinhalese to the core are anti- Indian.

    Nandasena R Wednesday, 21 September 2022 03:29 AM

RW you along with the Rajapakses not only went about an ethnic cleansing but also dehumanised Tamils in Sri Lanka (SL). One has to ask why these very Tamils who ran away from the shores of SL with merely with the cloths on their back to foreign lands after a huge struggle now lead successful lives. Why should they help you or the Pakshes who have robbed and pillage the country and left the very people they sore to safeguard against the Tamils? It is time you reap the reward for all the injustice, slaughter and destruction let loose on innocent Tamil lives- "What goes around comes around" - Karma!!

    Punchi Wednesday, 21 September 2022 03:37 AM

To tell us that there is light at the end of the tunnel is to hoodwink us. Unless we sort out the grievances on our minorities we are destined to be the poor trash of the world

    Ramesh Wednesday, 21 September 2022 04:25 AM

Wash off blood from your hands - your means , the government of Sri Lanka. Then extend your hand for a hand shake, people will come to do so. But now very sorry sir!

Emma Wijegunawardana Wednesday, 21 September 2022 06:02 AM

You invest, Ranil Rajapaksa government will steel your money. Ranil Rajapaksa is a famous bank robber, once a crook always a crook .

    Gehan Wednesday, 21 September 2022 07:46 AM

Mr President, it has become a local sport to defraud and rip off expats coming to Sri Lanka to invest in good faith. Many have tried for many years and the same system, people and mindset is still in place despite your efforts to verbally reset the relationships. The cat is out of the bag now and until there's real and tangible change, you will be a lone voice asking the diaspora for help.

Percy Wijenayake Wednesday, 21 September 2022 08:01 AM

I always like to give a helping hand to uplift our country, even without the privilege of free education and rejecting the 10 % cut, given by the contractors. But discretely have assisted the North as a volunteer. Generally, the Sinhalese professionals resent expertise from Sri Lankans abroad. Red Tape and too many questions from the Government are barriers for assistance.

Kamal Bolawansa Wednesday, 21 September 2022 08:10 AM

We don't want Ranil's 2024 plans by that time 3/4 of the population would have died and only 1/4 will remain suffering, even Ranil or Rajapakshes' will be in the graves by then.

Hubert Congreve Wednesday, 21 September 2022 08:11 AM

Ranil as long as you join with Rajapakshes and protect the rouges no countries will come and invest in Sri Lanka.

Atha Katha Somay Wednesday, 21 September 2022 08:13 AM

Like Rajapakshes family, next time no other countries will entertain you. Better step-down dissolve the parliament and go for an Election and legally come to power if you want to gain support from other countries.

    Arnold Wednesday, 21 September 2022 08:17 AM

Investors are not lunatics to invest in a bankrupt country with the most corrupt politicians in the history of humankind.

Boru Na Atha ...... Atha ...... Atha Wednesday, 21 September 2022 08:17 AM

Arrest and keep the robbers behind bars - (Mahinda, Basil, Namal and all corrupted SLPP politicians) hugging you at present, then globally you will become popular, and everyone will come and invest in our country, not otherwise.

Kokki Suda (Surain) from Kottawa Fish Market Wednesday, 21 September 2022 08:20 AM

You along with Mahinda, Basil, Gota and Namal with rotten SLPP Henchmen ruined our country, how could you expect investors to come and invest in a country named "ZERO".

    sam Wednesday, 21 September 2022 08:22 AM

You must be joking at a time Srilankans living here are finding ways and means to migrate to invite those happily settled overseas to come and get into a rut

Tissa Fernando Wednesday, 21 September 2022 08:51 AM

You cannot expect any meaningful development project under Ranil or UNP. And even SJB. They focus on eating and drinking.

Fairness for our citizen everywhere Wednesday, 21 September 2022 12:31 PM

Nothing new in his speech. He is not good in impression in the photo. He looks like desperado willing do any trick to get money for little actual return for those investing. The Sinhala diaspora has Ranil's recent nature. The diaspora were most for the Aragalaya. All the talk against dual citizen would have hit them too, so Ranil and the parliament better watch it if they want to keep them on side. The Tamil diaspora are interested for fairness after crimes against Tamil people living in the North and East. Ranil asking for more from them, after how they saw even the brutality towards those of the Aragalaya means, I'd be shocked if they'd be greedy or loose enough to invest in our country any time soon.

freddy foxx Wednesday, 21 September 2022 02:51 PM

The SL Diaspora in England must have attended through courtesy of the High Commission to listen to a bunch of lies uttered by a loser. The Sri Lankan's in England probably know of our sufferings better than those yakko's in the Parliament.

Mama rata yanva Wednesday, 21 September 2022 03:54 PM

Rather than chase after money of dual citizens, whom the parliament is maligning with 22A, why not follow up first for those who have no connection to our country since they maybe more naive about our nation's ways... Sri Lankans abroad are often those once bitten twice shy type. My own relative dual citizens in US have had enough of MPs gas bagging and incessant complaining about dual citizens. I am sure dual citizen in the UK would feel disrespected too by it too. I apply for residency overseas, now waiting and hate this talk against dual citizens being unworthy for government. That is backwards baseless mad nationalist thinking. I have no intention of sending money back once I go for residency for the sake of Sri Lankan until the MPs in the current parliament stop being fools and behaving like crooks.

You all learn a lesson from beggars Wednesday, 21 September 2022 10:09 PM

Ranil Sir rather than inviting people from other countries to invest here why can't your Rajapakshas/ your friends who have invested in other countries to bring the hoarded Dollars and invest here. You can give them a Presidential pardon and retire from politics and look after the businesses. You perform all these dramas to save one family at the cost of rest of the country and for you to remain in power

    Dinesh Thursday, 22 September 2022 03:14 AM

SL is not financially broke, it is morally broke. Much worse. No remedy. Seal the orders and let it wither on the vine

Andrew Silva Thursday, 22 September 2022 12:17 PM

You want money from us who are living in rich countries. We are ready to help only on one condition. First and foremost get the Rajapakshas and their cronies who plundered the country dry and stacked that money in other countries to bring back those Billions of Dollars. You are the President only you, can,do it. Show the country men and the world you have the spine. If that happens Mr. President money will flow to the country. We will not stop sending money to,our Mother Land. Other wise Sri Lanka will remain,a Banana Republic.
