In such a situation where the speculations on lifting current lockdown are on the spotlight, the Association of Medical Specialists (AMS) urged the Government to further extend the lockdown until the beginning of October.
In a statement, the AMS said the country had just started to witness the positive impact of sustained lockdown with gradually declining case load, oxygen requirement and mortality.
"A further period of extension of these travel restrictions will be required to reap the benefits of all the sacrifices of the entire nation. Therefore, we feel that due consideration should be given to long term gains overlooking short term losses when the extension of lockdown is reviewed," the Specialists pointed out.
The AMS also warned that if the relaxation of current restrictions happens too soon, there is a high possibility of severe spread of the disease resulting in sudden rise of hospital admissions and the death rate.
"As a country, our aim should be to move to the “Green Zone” from the current “red zone”. With this in mind, the AMS would like to request the decision makers to seriously consider taking this lockdown further to the beginning of early next month," it reiterated. (Sheain Fernandopulle)

Why not lockdown until end of 2025 which is the project closing date. AMS has nothing to loose if the country enters the green zone or not they are well off. Dont be so cruel on the daily wage earners!

Herd immunity is almost achieved and the pandemic will be over in 2 weeks. It is not necessary to extend the lockdown and wreck the economy further.

Covid-19 is a Medical problem but we are forced to resort to lockdowns, quarantines, and face masks resulting in the national life coming to almost a halt. So this begs a logical question “ WHAT DO THE DOCTORS STUDY IN THEIR FIVE OR SOME TIMES EVEN SIX LONG YEARS OF THEIR MBBS DEGREE “ ? . All the health staff are working in hospitals. Now they all have extra works and frustrated. Lockdown is not beneficial for health staff at all. If anyone have sixth sense can understand the problem and follow the health advices.

This is just an attempt to cut the fuel consumption as the government no longer has reserves to fulfill the need. Earlier, government was reluctant to go even for a 1 week lockdown and now suddenly they are very happy to extend.

Once buses and trains run full capacity the virus is going to spread. We are only 55%vacinated. It is a good idea to speed up vaccinations and open up early October.

Nobody follow this and no authority properly monitoring this so called lock down. There is no regulation and everyone running their own manner! This improper lockdown should be lifted! Because this is useless without self discipline.This restrictions exists only in terms not in practice! Atleast open and help the economy!

It's only major supermarkets, liquor stores, larger stores and hospitality that is not open. What sort of lockdown is this? Extend it all you like but with current levels of activity infections won't reduce much more. Open everything or shut everything. This government can't even do a lockdown properly never mind run a country!
