The Lanka Private Bus Owners' Association (LPBOA) has made a request to the government to intervene and import 50 electric buses to strengthen the transport service in the country.

LPBOA Chairman Gemunu Wijerathne said a letter in connection with this has been sent to the Presidential Secretariat in view to receive the attention of the President.

He said a Chinese company has agreed to provide the total fleet of buses and agreed to provide the charging points free of charge.

Those buses are low-floored and are very easy for the passengers to travel, he said.

Mr. Wijerathne has also requested the environmental protection associations to urge for the project as it is an Eco-friendly.

"Those buses can be assigned in the Western Province and we can assign the existing crew to operate it.

The buses which are currently being used can be assigned to provide transport facilities in the rural areas," Mr. Wijerathne said. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)

But who is sensible enough to drive them. There are no suitable training facilities here nor trainers. These are not suitable for private bus owners as many owners can't drive let alone understand even the workings of an electric motor let alone a diesel engine.
