The cashier attached to the Galenigama Interchange of the Southern Expressway who fled with Rs.1.4 million in cash taken from the safe of the Interchange booth office, was arrested yesterday.
Police Spokesman SSP Nihal Thalduwa said that the police only recovered Rs.384,000 out of the Rs. 1.4 million from the suspect's possession.
The Bandaragama Police have received a complaint by a Chief Engineer of the expressway that a chief cashier who was in charge of collections vanished with the money.
Preliminary investigations revealed that Rs. 1,418,500 in cash was stolen from the cashiers' safe and the daily collection box.
The Spokesman said the suspect is a gambling addict and the money had been stolen to repay the debts.
The suspect is to be produced before the Panadura Magistrate. (Darshana Sanjeewa Balasuriya)
