The Cabinet yesterday endorsed two key proposals to be implemented in the public service introducing a four-day work week for employees and five year no pay leave for those willing to migrate for foreign jobs, Daily Mirror learns.
Friday will be declared a public holiday for them except for those in essential sectors such as education and health.
With three non working days, public sector employees will be encouraged to carry out agricultural work to increase production in the country.
Besides, public servants can apply for five year no pay leave to go abroad for employment opportunities.
It will not affect their promotions or retirement upon return. (Kelum Bandara)

In a five day week most of them wont do even 2 days proper work. What can general public expect from 4 day week?

They anyway don't do much work on a normal day, so doesn't make much of a difference. But we still have to foot their salary bill while they chill and we toil.

Omg... Who the hell is making these recommendations? SL's GDP is going to go from bad to worse. Also, good luck with encouraging state sector employees to carry out agricultural work, considering what little they do in the public sector.

Reduce their salaries as well.

If public servants are encouraged to go abroad, the best people will leave and the country will suffer more. In the past the people who had good jobs abroad were requested to return with 'brain drain' being cited as a loss to the country

It should not come free for the government employees. it is common knowledge that their efficiency is extremely low. They should be required to do the weeks quota of work in 4 days and without over time. If not the tax payers will have to take hit. I wonder the politicians have the brain to re assign work and re think the strategy to implement 4 day week?

Wow! 160 week-ends 13 Poya days 8 Festival Holidays = 181 total holidays for Sri Lanka, may be more if some 2 penny politician dies. It is 50% of the year. Oh! We love you Gota! You are only one who gave 52 days with one stroke.
