The COVID-19 patients who have been diagnosed with ‘Black fungus’ have been detected from several areas of the country, Deputy Director-General of Health Services Dr Hemantha Herath said.

He said the cases had been reported from several hospitals including Colombo National Hospital, Kurunegala and Rathnapura.

"The symptoms of this disease develop depending on the place where fungi appear on the body. The fungi can be found on the skin, around eyes, nose, brain and lungs," he explained.

“These fungi are in the environment. People with the extremely low immune system are prone to this fungus,” Dr Herath added.

He proceeded to say that this disease does not spread from person to person and there was no possibility of turning into an epidemic.

Earlier, ordinary patients with black fungus have been found in Sri Lanka since 2019. However, this is the first time where COVID-19 patients are getting infected with black fungus. (Sheain Fernandopulle)

Medical professionals are suffering from media mania. I hope government will come up with a good vaccine to combat this.

Black Fungus is reported as appearing in many Covid-19 patients in India about three months ago. It never happened in any other country during this pandemic, thus this must have spread to Sri Lanka from India. Why can’t the Health Service Tell this without fear to the country.

Don't we have a dedicated person who represents the opinion of medical counsel? Different doctors, different opinions, and different issues make us all confused.

These experts never speak anything good but always seem to create some havoc and disturb the peace of mind'of the citizens.

Black Fungus doesn’t happen automatically! It happens when COVID treatment protocols aren’t properly followed. Excessive usage of steroids are one of the important reasons, then uncleared ventilators etc. Never happened in the West.

You are the biggest black fungus in the health department.
