President opens archaeological museum and research institute at Somawathi



Colombo, Oct. 6 (Daily Mirror) - A newly constructed two-storey building housing the Archaeological Museum and the International Archaeological Research Institute at the historic Somawathi sacred area in Polonnaruwa was officially opened today under the patronage of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, the President’s Media Division (PMD) said.

The facility, developed under the supervision of the Department of Archaeology, follows guidance from the Chief Incumbent of Somawathi Raja Maha Vihara and Registrar of the Mahavihara Vansika Syamopali Maha Nikaya of the Malwatta Chapter, the Most Venerable Dr. Pahamune Sri Sumangala Nayaka Thero. The project was fully funded by Deshamanya Mithrapala Lankeshwara, Chairman of the Rathna Group, aiming to enhance the experience of devotees visiting the Somawathi Chaityarajaya where the Sacred Right Tooth Relic of Lord Buddha is enshrined as well as supporting scholars engaged in archaeological and research activities.

President Dissanayake began his visit with religious observances at the Chaityarajaya, receiving blessings before unveiling the commemorative plaque to mark the opening of the new building. He also made the first floral offering to the Buddha statue and the sacred relic casket within the premises.

On the occasion, Deshamanya Mithrapala Lankeshwara presented a commemorative gift to the President.

Addressing the gathering, Minister of Buddhasasana, Religious and Cultural Affairs, Dr. Hiniduma Sunil Senevi, said the museum and research institute will serve as a key gateway for understanding the rich history and archaeological significance of the Somawathi Chaityarajaya. He further highlighted that ongoing development at the sacred site would be carried out through a systematic plan integrating modern science and technology, ensuring the preservation of this heritage for both Sri Lanka and the global community.

The inauguration was attended by the Maha Sangha, led by the Most Venerable Dr. Pahamune Sri Sumangala Nayaka Thero, along with North Central Province Governor Wasantha Jinadasa, Deputy Minister of Housing T.B. Sarath, Members of Parliament, other public representatives, Ms. Manel Deepani Gamage, Director of the Rathna Group, and members of the Dayaka Sabha.
