Colombo, May 16 (Daily Mirror) - Claiming that members of various local bodies have agreed to support chairpersons of the National People's Power (NPP), Minister Bimal Ratnayake said today that the NPP's Vraie Cally Balthazaar is sure to become the Mayoress of the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC).
He told reporters that the attempt by opposition groups to form councils as joint alliances is an anti-democratic act.
The Minister said people have not voted for small groups who secured two or three seats to establish administrations in local bodies.
"Most of the local bodies cannot function with their own funds. They depend on funds from the central government. Divisional level development will be hampered if opposition groups form councils," he said.
The Minister said people must make sure not to allow small groups to form councils through conspiracies.
"The opposition groups will resort to the same old corrupt practices, if they take over power in councils. They even went on foreign visits during the economic crisis. The former Mayoress used a Porche vehicle during the crisis," he said.
