Local investment up 18%, 200 major tax evaders identified: President

Colombo, August 7 (Daily Mirror) - In the government’s push against tax evasion, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake revealed in Parliament that he is in possession of a list of 200 major tax evaders, who collectively owe between Rs. 100 to 150 billion in unpaid taxes.

He said the upcoming budget projects a revenue of Rs. 4.5 trillion—an estimate that was initially dismissed by many as unrealistic.

However, the President noted that reforms to the Inland Revenue Department, Customs, and Excise, along with efforts to bring more people into the tax net, are now yielding results.

He also noted that local investment has grown by 18% compared to last year, with signs that 2025 could be one of Sri Lanka’s best economic years.

He added that 50 top loan defaulters from state banks have been summoned for talks, and assured that banks now have full independence to take action and combat corruption.

President Dissanayake also announced that foreign reserves are projected to surpass $7 billion by December this year.
