Japan Automobile Association files complaint over illegal import of 150 vehicles
The Sri Lanka Automobile Association in Japan (SLAAJ) has filed a written complaint with the Controller General of the Import and Export Control Department, Sri Lanka, alleging that a certain company is attempting to import vehicles manufactured in 2022, violating the restriction on importing vehicles produced after January 15, 2023.
According to the complaint, the importer is pressuring the three Japanese agencies responsible for issuing vehicle quality certificates to falsify manufacturing dates, making it appear that the vehicles meet the import criteria. Allegedly, at least 150 such vehicles were imported this week using false dates.
Government regulations specify that only vehicles manufactured after January 15, 2023, may be imported.
However, the complaint said that this company is manipulating certification agencies to bring in vehicles from 2022 under fraudulent production dates.
The SLAAJ also claimed that such actions constitute a violation of government regulations, and vehicles imported based on falsified documents should not be allowed into the Sri Lankan market.
Therefore the association called for these vehicles to be re-exported.
The SLAAJ noted that the first batch of vehicles from Thailand is expected to arrive this month, while the first shipment from Japan is scheduled for mid-next month.
Nearly 2,000 vehicles are expected to arrive from Japan in the initial shipment, they said.
