Court to consider intervention pleas in Suresh Sallay’s writ case on July 17

The Court of Appeal today fixed July 17 to consider several intervention petitions filed by individuals and organisations, including prominent Buddhist monks, seeking permission to intervene in the writ application filed by Major General (Retired) Suresh Sallay, former Director of the State Intelligence Service.

Sallay is challenging the legality of his arrest and detention in connection with the Easter Sunday bomb attacks.

The intervention petitions were filed by Dr. Gunadasa Amarasekera, Ven. Bengamuwe Nalaka Thera, Ven. Dapane Sumanawansha Thera, Ven. Dimbulagala Rahulalankara Thera, Senior Consultant Dr. Sakunthala Senevirathna and the Global Sri Lankan Forum. They are seeking an order from the Court of Appeal permitting them to be added as party respondents to the pending writ application.

President’s Counsel Sanjeeva Jayawardena, appearing for the petitioner Sallay, is scheduled to continue his oral submissions. President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Rohantha Abeysuriya, announced that the submissions of the intervenient petitioners will be considered after the completion of Jayawardena’s submissions.
