Colombo, January 1 (Daily Mirror) - Development work on 76 rural roads will commence from January 1, 2026, under the government’s Road to Revival programme, aimed at improving living standards in rural areas, the Ministry of Transport, Highways and Urban Development said.
An allocation of Rs. 5,000 million has been provided for the first phase of the project, which seeks to strengthen village-level connectivity and improve access to essential services such as markets, schools and healthcare facilities.
Officials said the programme is expected to play a key role in boosting the rural economy by reducing transportation costs and improving mobility for residents. The initiative forms part of the government’s broader effort to promote balanced regional development and uplift underserved communities.
Bus services to begin on 40 previously unserved rural routes from January 1
Bus services will be introduced on 40 rural routes where public transport has not previously operated, effective January 1, 2026, as part of efforts to expand public transportation facilities in rural areas.
The initiative, implemented by the Ministry of Transport, Highways and Urban Development, is aimed at improving accessibility for rural residents, particularly students, workers and the elderly who rely on public transport for daily travel.
Authorities said the new services will help connect remote villages to main transport hubs, markets and essential services, while also supporting economic activity in rural regions. The move is expected to significantly improve mobility and reduce transportation challenges faced by rural communities.
