22 Oluwil university students suspended over ragging

Colombo, June 24 (Daily Mirror) - A group of 22 students from Oluwil University have been suspended for allegedly ragging first-year students, Vice Chancellor Prof. S.M. Junaideen said.

The university’s Registrar, M.I. Naufer, stated that a special committee made up of university professors has been appointed to carry out a formal investigation into the incident.

According to preliminary reports, a group of second-year students from the Engineering Faculty were involved in ragging several first-year students. University authorities said strict disciplinary action would be taken based on the findings of the investigation.

The incident has raised fresh concerns about ragging in universities, which remains a serious issue despite longstanding efforts to eliminate the practice from Sri Lanka’s higher education institutions.

Yes, this problem will NEVER be solved if they continue to take lackluster action. Need to send a strong message that there will be zero tolerance for ragging. Give them a lifetime ban on state sponsored higher education.

After taking decades a few years back there were new laws introduced to prosecute raggers. However upto date no administration has taken steps to do so. If a few raggers are also prosecuted like how politicians are been prosecuted the intensity and spread of ragging will drastically reduce. There are many many kids who don't even join state universities specially females due to their fear of ragging. It's a monster that has outgrown its innocence.

Also when freshers join the University, send them a LETTER to all students describing the importance of abiding the LAW and its consequences if not abided.

Ragging is rampant now because JVP is in power. They will just arrest a couple of them first publicity purpose but will not punish them.
