Planets during their journey around the Zodiac get into certain states of existence called Avasthas which are 10 in number.
Avasthas help determine the strength or the weakness of a planet which is vital for the judgement of a horoscope. Besides, readers have to be conversant with the terms used to describe different Avasthas for they may come across references to them in the course of reading articles on Astrology.
The 10 Avasthas and the results the different planets produce when they are in these Avasthas are as follows:
Deepta (Exaltation): Gains of vehicles for comfortable travel, fame, wealth, respect from elders and fortunate children.
Swastha or Swakshetra (Own House): Happiness, good children, fame, wealth, high position and lands and other property.
Mudita ( in the House of a friendly planet): happiness, self-confidence, and optimistic outlook
Santha (in auspicious Vargas or sub-divisions): Courage, drive, motivation, benevolence, comforts, and happiness.
Sakta ( Retrogression): Courage, reputation, wealth, and good children
Peediya (In the last quarter of a sign): Criminal prosecution, imprisonment, pilfering habits and departure from the country of birth.
Deena (In an unfriendly House): Anxiety, unsound mind, sickness, and depravity.
Vikala or Combustion: Loss of wife and children, ailments and becoming an orphan.
Khala or Neecha (Debilitation): Imprisonment, being irreligious, losses, lowly birth, friction with parents and relations.
Bhita or Accelerations: being subject to torture, many foes, mean habits and danger in foreign countries.
