One dead as London-Singapore flight hit by turbulence
May 21 (BBC)- One person has been killed and several others injured on a Singapore Airlines flight from London that was hit by severe turbulence.
The Singapore-bound Boeing 777-300ER was diverted to Bangkok and landed at 15:45 local (08:45 GMT).
Flight SQ 321 was carrying a total of 211 passengers and 18 crew, the airline said in a statement.
"Singapore Airlines offers its deepest condolences to the family of the deceased," it said.
The airline added that it was working with Thai authorities to provide medical assistance to passengers, and was sending a team to Bangkok to provide any additional help needed.
Thai authorities have despatched ambulances and emergency teams to Suvarnabhumi Airport.
Singapore's Transport Minister Chee Hong Tat said the government would provide assistance to the passengers and their families.
"I am deeply saddened to learn about the incident onboard Singapore Airlines flight SQ321 from London Heathrow to Singapore," he posted in a statement on Facebook.

Singapore is a rich country in Asia because it has allowed all big multinationals in the world to have a low tax head office in Singapore. Because Singapore is artificially British created country and filled with labourers brought in from China and India , and educated people brought in from Jaffna, Sri Lanka; after British left the country moved with same mind set of “ No National Pride” but focus is on “ Making Money”. They boasted they have the best airlines in the world , as if they produced the airplanes, but shamefully they could not protect the passengers in dealing with air turbulence. Turbulences are very common in air travels but in advanced countries the pilots are trained to deal with them efficiently , but Singapore pilots failed miserably. If any one question my assertion , ask yourselves , When was the last time you heard passengers dying and getting seriously injured due to turbulence ?

Just the tip of the iceberg. Airlines would be required to fly longer distances to avoid turbulent air masses or fly at a higher altitude perhaps. That means higher airfares or to limit unnecessary air travel. We are already overpopulated on Earth. Governments could only regulate , the citizens need to understand that we need to reduce consumption and population.

Apparently it was a “ clear air pocket” incident which could not be detected much earlier. Similar incident happened last year on an Emirate 380 jumbo. Experts predicting more such incidents due to global warming. Btw, SIA made a huge profit for 2023 /24 financial year and most of their employees are getting a 8 months bonus. Please update that Minister who says no airline making profits!

This is inadequate safety precautions. Even Singapore airlines have gone down badly. This type of turbulence and common and can be managed if the precautions are taken at correct time. It's not the fault of the aircraft.

There are various kinds of turbulence- Google up! Seems this particular turbulence was not detected by the aircraft systems in advance and was very severe. As a precaution, always belt up and will minimise these kinds of injuries.

Airlines should consider issuing durable bicycle helmets to passengers as part of the amenities similar with pillows and blankets. Use the helmets whilst visiting the toilets. Crews too shud wear them once they are servicing the passengers and not buckled up.

It is easy to criticize SIA blindly BUT low pressure pockets are a common occurrence in the present fickle weather conditions observed world over. If a well respected airline had a casualty over this incident - please do not even think of Air SRI LANKA. Perhaps it would have lost the plane and the entire passengers.

@Propaganda-seems you like a few foreigners couldn’t make it in Spore with their way of work and living! The one’s with good work culture and attitude have adjusted and there are heaps(around a million foreigners) working and some SL also have taken up permanent residence. They enjoy rule of law and comfortable living conditions. Those who are lazy, expecting freebies, a carefree attitude won’t last in Spore. Btw, SIA is paying most of its staff a 8 months bonus for financial year 2023/24. Work hard and Play hard attitude is needed in Spore! Nothing comes for free as seen mostly in SL and how the country is in debt by the Billions in USD currency.

The fact is unlike windshear, air turbulence can happen anytime and at any altitude without any advance notice, it has nothing to do with the pilots knowledge or the aircraft's performance. Main reason for injuries were due to some passengers not wearing seat belts. In every flight , the pilots always advice the passengers to wear seat belt even when tge seat belt signs are off. Sudden turbulence are uncommon but could happen. Singapore Airlines is one of the top airlines in the world. Some readers here try to pconvey we know every thing mentality through their irrelevant comments ( typical of sone Sri Lankans)

I think it's a problem with Boieng. They are just blaming turbulence for their shortcomings due to compromising production safety standards. So far two whistleblowers who came out regarding this has died under mysterious circumstances.

A similar incident happened on an Emirates Airbus 380 flight last year. Around 14 passengers were hurt. It’s more a natural occurrence but all need to wait for the official confirmations from Boeing who has a team being despatched, Thai and Spore authorities too whose officials are reading the Blackboxes.

So is there an alternative? Boeings and Air Bus are the major aircraft manufacturers in the world. Millions of people reach their destinations without any incident but some bad things could happen once in a way. This is true even if you ride the Mercedes S500 luxury car as in the case of Diana. How many people die on the road in Sri Lanka? So , in that case all vehicles should be having problems.

Clear Air Turbulence is unpredictable and not visible to flight radars - that is the reason pilots always request to wear seat belts.
