Google is finally letting you change your Gmail address

April 1 (Neowin) - For years, your Gmail address has been something you were effectively stuck with; whether it reflected your teenage obsessions, early internet humour, or a questionable combination of numbers and nicknames. That is now finally starting to change.

Google has begun rolling out a long-requested feature that allows users to change their primary Google Account email address. This feature was first spotted late last year, when early details hinted at the tech giant testing username changes.

Until now, changing a Gmail address typically meant creating an entirely new account and starting from scratch. With this update, users can choose a new Gmail address while keeping their existing account intact. However, the feature is being introduced gradually, so it may not yet be available to everyone.

If your current email ends in @gmail.com, you will see an option in your account settings to switch to a new Gmail address. Once you make the change, your old email doesn’t disappear; instead, it becomes an alternate email linked to your account. You’ll still be able to sign in using either address, and messages sent to both will continue to reach you. Importantly, none of your existing data will be affected by the change.

There are; however, a few limitations to keep in mind. While you can revert to your previous email if needed, you won’t be able to create a completely new Gmail address again for 12 months after making the change. Additionally, once your new address is set, it cannot be deleted.

Overall, this update is a long-awaited improvement that gives users more flexibility over their digital identity. While it’s a relatively small change on the surface, it solves a long-standing frustration for millions of users and offers a practical solution for anyone ready to move on from an outdated or embarrassing email address.
